Vienna pilot tests zero-emission food delivery and circular packaging

A GreenTurn pilot in Vienna is testing how fulfilment operations can reduce both transport emissions and packaging waste. Running from February 2026 to January 2027, it brings together logistics operator LogPOINT, organic-food partner La Vialla, delivery operator Veloce and research and consulting partner ECONSULT. Two complementary solutions are being introduced and assessed under real operating conditions: electric last-mile delivery and the on-site reuse of cardboard packaging.

Two changes within one fulfilment operation

Before the pilot, parcels destined for Vienna entered the conventional parcel delivery network, while cardboard boxes arriving at the fulfilment hub were discarded and new filling material was purchased for outgoing shipments.

The Vienna pilot addresses both processes. The first activity focuses on the last mile. Organic-food items from La Vialla are stored and their online-orders are fulfilled at the LogPOINT fulfilment hub before being transferred, together with the relevant delivery data, to Veloce. The company plans the delivery rounds and distributes the parcels to customers in Vienna using electric CargoScooters.

Veloce’s compact CargoScooters are designed for local urban distribution and combine electric propulsion with cargo capacity suited to parcel delivery. Their use allows the selected last-mile rounds to be completed without tailpipe emissions while testing how this type of vehicle can be integrated into the daily work of an existing fulfilment hub.

The second activity focuses on packaging. Instead of disposing of incoming cardboard boxes, LogPOINT collects and selects suitable material, shreds it on-site and reuses it as protective filling for new shipments.

This creates a circular flow within the fulfilment operation: cardboard that would otherwise become waste is transformed into a useful packaging material. The pilot will examine whether the process can reduce waste, external purchases of filling material and packaging costs while remaining practical for employees to manage as part of their regular workflow.

Testing the solutions in daily operations

Each organisation contributes a different part of the pilot. LogPOINT manages parcel fulfillment, the packaging process, data exchange and operational monitoring. La Vialla provides the organic-food parcel flow, while Veloce carries out the electric last-mile deliveries. ECONSULT supports data collection and carries out performance monitoring and evaluation.

Throughout the pilot, the partners will collect evidence on environmental, operational and economic performance. For the delivery activity, the assessment will consider emissions, delivery costs, vehicle utilisation, route performance and customer satisfaction. The packaging activity will examine how much cardboard can be reused, how this affects the purchase of new filling material and whether the process produces measurable cost and resource savings

What the Vienna pilot aims to learn

The pilot will help determine whether electric CargoScooter delivery and on-site cardboard reuse can become reliable and economically feasible elements of everyday fulfilment operations. It will also identify the practical conditions needed to apply these approaches at other logistics centres and in other urban delivery areas.

As one of five GreenTurn pilots across Europe, the Vienna pilot contributes evidence on how cleaner transport and more responsible use of packaging materials can be addressed together. Further findings will be shared as implementation and monitoring continue.
